Orthodontics
What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dental and jaw irregularities. If crowding, malocclusion and gaps between your teeth bother you aesthetically, do not let it prevent you from smiling. A beautiful and healthy smile is everyone's right.
What is Orthodontic Treatment?
The term “orthodontics” is of Greek origin and means “straight teeth”. This treatment method deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of irregularities in the teeth and jaw. Orthodontic treatment can solve both dental and jawbone problems such as crowding, gaps, gingivities, jaw stenosis, crossbites, cleft lip and palate and correction of impacted teeth.
Importance of Orthodontic Treatment
Since crowded teeth are more difficult to clean, gum disease and cavities can develop more easily. Disorders in joint relations and chewing problems can lead to digestive system problems. If the upper and lower teeth are not fully compatible, excessive load on the jaw joint or teeth can cause painful and difficult to treat problems. In addition, due to incompatibility, teeth may not find a place and remain impacted, which can lead to melting or cyst formation in the roots of neighboring teeth.
In terms of aesthetics, orthodontics increases your self-confidence with a healthy mouth structure and a beautiful smile. Orthodontic braces are an effective method to achieve this goal.
What Causes Irregularities in Teeth and Jaws?
Hereditary irregularities (genetic factors).
Habits such as finger sucking, prolonged use of bottles or pacifiers.
Early loss of deciduous teeth or loss of material due to large cavities.
How is Orthodontic Treatment Applied?
Orthodontic treatment is divided into two as fixed and mobile according to the application method:
a) Fixed Orthodontic Treatment:
Fixed orthodontic treatment is the treatment method performed with fixed appliances that the patient cannot remove on his/her own. Corrugated metal or porcelain brackets called brackets are attached to the teeth. The wire passing between these brackets is replaced at intervals of 4-6 weeks. Tooth-colored porcelain brackets attract less aesthetic attention.
b) Removable Orthodontic Treatment:
Removable orthodontic treatment is a form of treatment with appliances that the patient can wear and remove. It is generally suitable for children between the ages of 6 and 12. In some cases, both fixed and removable treatment methods may need to be applied together.
How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?
Orthodontic treatment aims to direct, increase or decrease the development of the jaw and teeth by applying force to the jawbone and teeth during development. Fixed and removable appliances are effective by applying these forces to the teeth and jaw bones.
Is it Possible to Make Appliances Less Noticeable?
Today, with the development of dental technology, tooth-colored or transparent porcelain brackets can be used in orthodontic treatment. In addition, the brackets can be placed on the inner surface of the teeth, preventing them from being completely noticeable from the outside.
